Words of wisdom

In Arguendo is a zine about Ace Attorney. Let's start there. It is a zine about a deeply silly, deeply compelling
series of visual novels. It is a zine about having way too much to say about said visual novels. It is a zine
about interpretation — the personal act of looking closely at something you love and saying, now just what
do I find so interesting about this?
.

These games have maintained their relevance exactly because they invite close consideration. A character one person adores will be absolutely insufferable to another. We can all agree some strange decisions were made during the writing of Turnabout Bigtop, but we can also argue that the case had huge significance for multiple characters' development. No single reading can encompass all the different ways of understanding these games. In Arguendo wants to explore that.

We welcome all thoughtful approaches to the series, including contradictory ones, so long as they are respectful and free from bigotry. That being said, we are especially interested in feminist perspectives and questions of gender, power, and justice. The courtroom is not a neutral place in real life or on the screen, and, while muddled sometimes, Ace Attorney gets that point across.

What do you have to say about it?

Meet the editors

Margot — Editor-in-chief in her idiot hat

Favourite character: Franziska von Karma

Hello! My name is Margot and I am the sick and twisted creator of In Arguendo. I love Ace Attorney an unhealthy amount, and love writing essays just a little bit less; this project is my way of marrying the two!

Jules — Editor

Favourite character: Trucy Wright

Hi! I'm Jules, editor extraordinaire and Ace Attorney opinion haver. I enjoy interrogating the series' depiction of justice/morality and how that shapes the characters and their relationships with each other!

Ace Attorney impresses me the most with its ability to use off the wall comedy and cartoonish character interactions to deliver something with real emotional impact that holds up to and is enriched by attempts to look beyond its surface level.

Full-body art of Mia Fey dramatically pointing an objection.
